How Artificial Intelligence Supports, Rather Than Replaces, Commanders

Recent conflicts have accelerated a fundamental shift in how military decisions are made. From drone warfare in Ukraine and the Middle East to missile defence operations in the Red Sea, commanders are operating in environments defined by speed, data saturation and persistent threat. The volume of information generated by modern sensors, autonomous systems and electronic warfare activity has reached levels that cannot be processed effectively through traditional command structures alone.

This reality has driven the emergence of human-machine teaming as a central concept in modern defence planning. Artificial intelligence is not replacing commanders. It is reshaping how command authority is exercised by compressing decision cycles, improving situational awareness and enabling forces to act at a tempo that adversaries cannot match.

The key question is not whether machines will take decisions away from humans. It is whether human decision-makers can maintain control of increasingly complex operational environments without computational support.

The character of contemporary conflict helps explain why this shift has become unavoidable. In Ukraine, the proliferation of low-cost drones and electronic warfare systems has created a battlespace in which frontline units must continuously interpret sensor feeds, adapt tactics and respond to threats that can emerge and disappear within minutes. In the Middle East, missile and drone attacks have required naval commanders to classify targets and initiate defensive engagements within extremely narrow time windows. Across these environments, the advantage belongs to forces that can observe, decide and act faster than their opponents.

Artificial intelligence enables this acceleration by automating the analysis of large data flows that would otherwise overwhelm human staff. Computer vision systems can identify equipment movements, infrastructure damage and changes in activity patterns across vast areas of terrain. Signals processing algorithms can classify emitters and detect anomalies in the electromagnetic spectrum. Predictive models can identify potential courses of adversary action based on historical patterns and real-time indicators. These capabilities do not remove human judgement from the decision process. They create the conditions in which human judgement can be applied before opportunities are lost.

Human-machine teaming therefore represents a redistribution of cognitive effort rather than a transfer of authority. Machines process data at scale and speed. Humans interpret intent, assess risk and determine the political and ethical implications of military action. The effectiveness of this partnership depends on trust in the outputs produced by AI systems and on the ability of commanders to understand how those outputs are generated. Without transparency and validation, accelerated decision cycles risk becoming fragile rather than advantageous.

Operational security considerations further reinforce the importance of maintaining human oversight. AI systems rely on data flows, communications networks and computational infrastructure that adversaries actively seek to disrupt. Electronic warfare attacks, cyber intrusion and information manipulation can degrade or distort automated analysis if systems are not designed with resilience in mind. Human-machine teaming is therefore most effective when supported by distributed architectures that allow forces to continue operating even when connectivity is degraded or denied.

Another dimension of the shift is organisational. Military command structures developed around hierarchical information flows are being tested by environments in which frontline units must make rapid decisions using locally processed intelligence. Edge computing and autonomous systems allow data exploitation to occur closer to the point of collection, reducing latency and increasing operational agility. This requires doctrinal adaptation, new training approaches and greater emphasis on initiative at lower levels of command. Technology alone cannot deliver decision advantage if institutions are not prepared to operate at the speed it enables.

The ethical framework surrounding AI integration remains central to defence policy. International humanitarian law requires human accountability for the use of force. Responsible human-machine teaming therefore focuses on augmenting decision quality rather than delegating lethal authority. Automated systems can prioritise threats, recommend responses and simulate potential outcomes, but commanders retain responsibility for determining whether and how force is applied. This distinction is critical for maintaining legitimacy in conflict as well as operational effectiveness.

The strategic implications extend beyond the battlefield. Nations that build sovereign capability in AI engineering, data infrastructure and secure computational environments will be better positioned to integrate human-machine teaming across their armed forces. Those that rely heavily on external technology providers may find their decision-making architectures constrained by supply chain vulnerabilities, software dependencies or governance limitations during crisis. In an era where the speed of decision can determine the outcome of engagements, control over the underlying technological ecosystem becomes a national security priority.

Human-machine teaming is therefore not a futuristic concept but a present operational requirement. Modern conflict is increasingly defined by compressed timelines, dispersed threats and contested information environments. Commanders supported by reliable computational tools can maintain situational awareness and operational initiative in ways that traditional processes cannot match.

The real strategic risk is not that artificial intelligence will replace human command. It is that forces which fail to integrate human-machine teaming effectively will find themselves outpaced by adversaries able to operate at machine-enabled tempo. In this environment, the partnership between human judgement and computational power becomes a defining feature of military readiness and a key determinant of strategic advantage.
